{"id":139,"date":"2013-04-19T16:35:57","date_gmt":"2013-04-19T16:35:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bender.library.american.edu\/archives\/?p=139"},"modified":"2013-04-19T16:35:57","modified_gmt":"2013-04-19T16:35:57","slug":"cataloging-complete-of-aus-mathematical-ciphering-books","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.american.edu\/archives\/cataloging-complete-of-aus-mathematical-ciphering-books\/","title":{"rendered":"Cataloging Complete of AU&#8217;s Mathematical Ciphering Books"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tArchives staff just completed cataloging AU&#8217;s mathematics copy books also known as cipher books.\u00a0 These manuscripts come in two types:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Instructions on mathematical principles, including arithmetic, square roots, and financial calculations which are followed by exercises and answers;<\/li>\n<li>Mathematical problems, calculations, and answers including arithmetic and financial calculations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>AU\u2019s collection contains manuscripts from twenty-two students from the United States and five from England.\u00a0 They were created between 1763 and1850.\u00a0 Several include hand drawn figures and illustrations.\u00a0 Though the bulk of the cipher books in our collection feature arithmetic problems, we have several with algebra, geometry and navigation problems as well.\u00a0 Over half of these manuscripts were donated to AU Library as part of the Karen D.
