Gray, a Methodist minister, served as Chancellor of American University from 1934-1940.<span> <\/span>At his inauguration in 1934, American University launched its School of Public Affairs.<span> <\/span>American University Library is in the process of cataloging some books from Gray\u2019s personal library.<span> <\/span>The books are all inscribed and dated.<span> <\/span>The inscriptions include Gray\u2019s location so you can follow his travels.<span> <\/span>One of the books is marked \u201cOn S.S. Lapland.\u201d <span> <\/span>Other locations include Detroit, Michigan, Gray Rocks, Gloucester, Massachusetts, Kansas City, Missouri, and Scranton, Pennsylvania.<span> <\/span>Gray Rocks was the name of his family\u2019s summer home.<span> <\/span><span> <\/span>Many of the books are slightly annotated. <span> <\/span><span> <\/span>The multiple inscriptions in the back document that Gray read <em>John Brown\u2019s Body<\/em> by Stephen Vincent Benet several times between 1928 and 1934. <span> <\/span>His annotations range from comments \u201cIt was Grant who said\u2026\u201d to criticism \u201cThis would be better in alternating rhyme.\u201d<span> <\/span>The collection reveals his interest in poetry, Shakespeare, and Greek drama.<span> <\/span>Though we do not have his entire library, this collection does provide us with insight into Joseph M.M.
