{"id":196,"date":"2015-12-02T16:10:14","date_gmt":"2015-12-02T21:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.american.edu\/cis\/?p=196"},"modified":"2015-12-02T16:10:14","modified_gmt":"2015-12-02T21:10:14","slug":"minutes-of-november-4-2015-virtual-meeting-with-dr-terry-flannery-vp-of-communication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.american.edu\/cis\/minutes-of-november-4-2015-virtual-meeting-with-dr-terry-flannery-vp-of-communication\/","title":{"rendered":"Minutes of November 4, 2015 Virtual Meeting with Dr. Terry Flannery, VP of Communication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tAttendees: Terry Flannery, Barbara Emshwiller, Carl Levan, Sonja Walti, Kara Andrade, Joseph Mortati<\/p>\n<p><strong>History<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>edu began with an app approach but was too difficult to maintain due to different devise and OS.<\/li>\n<li>Students were polled to get an idea of what content was most needed (e.g., bus schedules, library, menus).<\/li>\n<li>Currently, tablet + mobile = 25% of all traffic; expected to be 50% by end of 2016 but most content is not mobile-friendly.<\/li>\n<li>Most of our direct competitors are not yet mobile-friendly but we need to improve.<\/li>\n<li>Who has moved to mobile-friendly? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jhu.edu\">jhu.edu<\/a> is an example and it focuses on undergrad student prospects with the themes of \u201cshow don\u2019t tell\u201d, avoid clicks to content (use scroll instead), and simplify search.<\/li>\n<li>To give an idea of scale, AU\u2019s CMS has 46,000 pages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Goals<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Maintain page rankings for mobile use.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Better user experience: audience-driven, focus on most visited pages and first landing page.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Current Status<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Halfway through 3-month development of first 15 pages, which are enrollment-related.<\/p>\n<p>January 2016 Master Template, then a 4-8 month implementation schedule.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond 8 months, the following approach will be used:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If content has not changed in &lt;2 years, it\u2019s not a candidate for conversion.<\/li>\n<li>AU Portal needs an infrastructure change (it\u2019s based on Microsoft SharePoint).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Q+A<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Q: Will AU provide an opportunity to choose &#8216;Do Not Track&#8217; prior to beginning collection of data on visitors to AU websites? What about GPS or other location data?<\/p>\n<p>A: While the site will not know who or where the user is, it will know if the device has been to the site before.
