Yay, it&#8217;s Valentine&#8217;s Day on Sunday!<\/p>\n<p>Romantic comedies tend to tell milquetoast, often sociopathic stories based in Hollywood ideas romance; you can find plenty of them on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/aulibmedia\/romanceromantic-comedies\/\">our Romance Pinterest board<\/a>. A few dare to go someplace weirder, darker, or less satisfying than the typical meet-cute story, and we&#8217;d like to highlight five standout examples. We briefly considered featuring some more nihilistic movies like <i>Blue Valentine<\/i> or Lars von Trier&#8217;s <i>Antichrist<\/i> and <i>Nymphomaniac<\/i>, but we&#8217;re sticking with the ones you could still honestly call romantic comedies.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.wrlc.org\/cgi-bin\/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=5659976\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-Dd9Xllcv4zQ\/Vry-dHgW0BI\/AAAAAAAACJo\/NIaB_gkhUEY\/s400\/pdlp.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Punch-Drunk Love<\/b> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.wrlc.org\/cgi-bin\/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=5659976\">HU DVD 677<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Paul Thomas Anderson&#8217;s collaboration with Adam Sandler famously gave the <i>Grown Ups<\/i> star a place to show his acting range beyond his usual man-child roles. Young Harold&#8217;s obsession with death and repeated mock suicides drives him into the arms of an elderly woman who helps him appreciate life. This is by far one of the most violent romance movies ever filmed; it all builds to a blood-soaked subversion of the typical proposal scene at the ending.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.wrlc.org\/cgi-bin\/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=12536552\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-ldMLc11S9ZE\/Vry_BNY1uYI\/AAAAAAAACJ4\/J8qUudGcIIY\/s400\/cjf.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Celeste and Jesse Forever<\/b> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.wrlc.org\/cgi-bin\/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=12536552\">HU DVD 10951<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We have to spoil this one: Celeste and Jesse divorce, and by the end, they have overcome their discomfort and amicably separate. It&#8217;s extremely easy to mine failed relationships for endless will-they-won&#8217;t-they tension (let&#8217;s throw shade at <i>How I Met Your Mother<\/i> for this).
