In the early 2000s, Brooks was a writer for <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em>, and in 2006, he published the novel <em><a href=\"https:\/\/wrlc-amu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01WRLC_AMU\/1sph5q5\/alma9977859383604102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World War Z: an Oral History of the Zombie War<\/a><\/em>. With an oeuvre featuring acclaimed titles such as <em><a href=\"https:\/\/wrlc-amu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01WRLC_AMU\/1ncanq5\/alma9966598613604102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diner<\/a><\/em> (1982), <a href=\"https:\/\/wrlc-amu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01WRLC_AMU\/1ncanq5\/alma9965183133604102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Good Morning, Vietnam<\/em><\/a> (1987), and <a href=\"https:\/\/wrlc-amu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01WRLC_AMU\/1ncanq5\/alma9976596103604102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Rain Man<\/em><\/a> (1988) which earned him an Academy Award for best director. In the late 1990s, Gibson and Maddox co-wrote two episodes for the science fiction drama series <em>The X-Files<\/em>, titled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/wrlc-amu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01WRLC_AMU\/1ncanq5\/alma99140013333604102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kill Switch<\/a> <\/em>and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/wrlc-amu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01WRLC_AMU\/1ncanq5\/alma99140195783604102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">First Person Shooter<\/a><\/em>. In years since, Thompson has written and directed a number of films, some of which he adapted from his own Broadway productions. Less than a decade later, he walked onto stage and accepted the Academy Award for best screenplay for the 2018 film <em><a href=\"https:\/\/wrlc-amu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01WRLC_AMU\/1ncanq5\/alma99186118362404102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BlacKkKlansman<\/a><\/em>. After developing the screenplay from a 2014 memoir of the same title, Wachtel and his writing partner David Rabinowitz teamed up with Jordan Peele and Spike Lee to produce what would become a hugely successful, six-time-nominated Academy Award film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.american.edu\/mediaservices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/02\/r-williams-oscars.jpg\" alt=\"Russell Williams II\" class=\"wp-image-4191\" style=\"width:320px;height:auto\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0007020\/mediaviewer\/rm961198593\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IMDb<\/a>.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Russell Williams II<\/strong><br>Now a distinguished artist-in-residence in AU&#8217;s Film and Media Arts department, Russell Williams II began his career as an audio engineer while working on his BA in film production and literature. After graduating from AU in 1974, he pursued further training in audio engineering in Los Angeles, where he got his start in the film industry. Williams worked as a sound mixer for dozens of films and TV productions in the 80s, and in 1989, he won the Academy Award for best achievement in sound for his work on the movie <em><a href=\"https:\/\/wrlc-amu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01WRLC_AMU\/1ncanq5\/alma9959981403604102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glory<\/a><\/em>. With a nearly three decade on-screen career and well over 6000 episodes broadcast to date, no other television arbitrator has had such an enormous impact on the American conception of the legal system. Enrolling at AU in the early 1960s, Sheindlin earned a BA in Government and started her JD at Washington College of Law as the only female student in the class.
