and Marriage in the Peace Corps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: justify\">Not only did the Peace Corps experience provide opportunities to travel and develop skills, but also led to the development of romantic relationships between volunteers.\u00a0 Norm Heise noted the Peace Corps\u2019 reputation for \u201cbeing the best \u2018unofficial matrimonial agency\u2019 going at the time.\u201d\u00a0 The PCCA collection includes several stories of volunteers\u2019 dating escapades, but there are also two instances where volunteers married Toro Teaching Training College, in Northern Nigeria, from 1963-1965.\u00a0 After meeting in training at Columbia University, Norm Heise proposed to Janet Driggs.\u00a0 The two had known each other for less than a week.\u00a0 The couple married in August before departing in September for their assignments in Nigeria.\u00a0 As a result of their marriage, Peace Corps altered their placements to ensure the couple traveled, lived, and shared the experience together.\u00a0 Their collection includes photos and stories of their work in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_527\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Norm and Janet Heise in Toro, Nigeria, 1963<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The DeAntoni\u2019s story is a bit different.\u00a0 Both members of Turkey IV, Ed and Karen met during training and maintained contact while working in separate towns. \u00a0The two friends began a romantic relationship, in the midst of their service, after connecting at a party. \u00a0Karen wrote her parents on August 12, 1965, \u201cI\u2019m afraid this will come as an awful surprise, but then it\u2019s more fun that way\u2014last night I got engaged!\u201d\u00a0 Because of the distance and the realization her parents did not know Ed, Karen anxiously awaited their response.\u00a0 Ed informed his parents by writing, \u201cBefore you start reading this, sit down, get composed, light a cigarette\u2026In a word, it\u2019s too good to be true.\u00a0 Karen and I became engaged last night, and I\u2019m so happy I could cry.\u201d\u00a0 Their collection of letters uniquely presents their return to the US to marry, they quickly decided to hold a wedding in Ankara, Turkey.\u00a0 Their desire to travel together, avoid inconveniencing roommates, and being in love seemed sufficient enough.\u00a0 The approaching marriage influenced many of the couple\u2019s letters home\u2014especially Karen\u2019s\u2014discuss wedding plans, financial needs, and concerns about family planning.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_557\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a life-changing experiences established lasting bonds\u2014both friendly and romantic.\u00a0 In a letter to his parents, Ed explained, \u201cThis common experience has given us a tremendous basis for learning about each other, a common feeling for so many things, and the ground for our love to grow and flourish.\u201d\u00a0 For many volunteers, this experience of surviving a new place, establishing relationships, and sharing similar goals fostered the development of many romantic relationships.\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not only did the Peace Corps
