Five Films Featuring…Plenty of Pink!

We’re bringing back a Media Services blog staple: “Five Films Featuring…” And with cherry blossoms still on the mind, let’s keep enjoying these springtime vibes with a few films dedicated the color pink! Here are just a few that are available at the library but we could easily come up with a whole collection’s worth. (You could also say this list is Five Films Featuring Strong Female Leads!)

1. Barbie (2023)

Main character Barbie is shown from behind and stands atop a dreamhouse wearing a pink checkered dress and matching pink bow in her hair. She looks out at a fictional, vibrant Barbieland decorated with pink houses and palmtrees and waves to her neighbors.

You didn’t think we’d have a list about pink without Barbie, did you? The film that created an international shortage of pink paint? This Oscar nominee easily takes the number one spot.

2. Mean Girls (2004)

Four teenage girls dressed in pink stand in the middle of a busy shopping mall

The timeless line “on Wednesdays we wear pink” makes this one another obvious pick for our list. Pink bag, pink phone, pink bracelet. These ladies don’t just wear pink, they live in it! If you’re like them, make sure to watch the rest of these films to ensure you meet your weekly “pink quota”.

3. But I’m a Cheerleader (1999)

An orange room is darkened aside from the light of a projector glowing in the top center of the image. On either side of the projector sits teenage girls dressed in all pink and teenage boys dressed in all blue, seemingly watching whatever is projected in front of them. They all appear disinterested.

These outfits take the Mean Girls look to a whole new level. This film has its own pink-tastic sets and wardrobe with a few splashes of blue and rainbow to switch things up!

4. Legally Blonde (2001)

Main character Elle Woods stands confidently at the front of a courtroom dressed in a fuchsia outfit. Behind her sit a man and a woman in business suits. Behind them is a group of people watching the trial. Their faces are indistinguishable.

Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods wearing fuchsia in a courtroom. It needs to be on the list. What more is there to say?

5. Grease (1978)

Three women sit together outside in a plaza, two wearing pink leather jackets and one wearing a black shit. A fourth woman stands behind them also in a pink leather jacket. Three of the four women are admiring something in the distance. A man in the background plays with a Yo-Yo.

This inclusion of pink was enough to give the film it’s own prequal series in 2023, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies. But we think the original movie best displays that fashionable pink leather jacket.
