It’s Night 2 of the 13 Nights of Halloween Horror and the screams are starting to get louder! Candyman (1992) is our next film on this buzzing night. Taking place on another college campus, similar to ours, with bees swarming around just like American University’s Bees (kept on Mary Graydon Student Center’s second floor). Be wary of any candy left on the floor trailing to a mirror…

In this film, Helen becomes fascinated by the legend of “The Candyman”, a hook-handed killer said to haunt the Cabrini-Green housing project. Residents believed he lived behind the mirrors and walls of their apartments. According to the legend, if you chant his name five times into a mirror, he appears and guts you with his hook.
Helen doesn’t believe the story, so she jokes around and summons him anyway. As she discovers what really lies behind the mirror, she increasingly begins to doubt what’s real and what’s not…
A fun fact about the Candyman is that it was adapted from a story titled “The Forbidden” from the collection Books of Blood by Clive Barker, so it is actually an adaptation!
If you are looking for a supernatural horror film where you are questioning what’s real and what’s fiction, Candyman delivers a creepy story with a strong social message.
Candyman is available for members of the American University community to borrow on DVD from Bender Library or to stream online.
Come back tomorrow to see our pick for Night 3 of the 13 Nights of Halloween Horror.
