Martin Scorsese did a four hour interview with Fast Company last year for the December/January issue. In the interview he talked a lot about the business of making films and how he’s managed to stay in it and remain relevant for so long.

Over the four hours, Scorsese referenced 85 “films you need to see to know anything about film.” Some films he briefly mentioned, and others he spoke about more in depth. Fast Company compiled a list which includes his direct quotes about the films where applicable, and which provides brief descriptions of the films when quotes weren’t available. This list is being blogged about as a unique film list that’s almost like the ultimate film course designed by a legendary filmmaker. There are some omissions noted by the ArtInfo blog, but they do recognize that he couldn’t list every influential film in history.

Here’s the beginning of Scorsese’s list. Go to Fast Company for the complete list.

Ace in the Hole: “This Billy Wilder film was so tough and brutal in its cynicism that it died a sudden death at the box office, and they re-released it under the title Big Carnival, which didn’t help. Chuck Tatum is a reporter who’s very modern–he’ll do anything to get the story, to make up the story! He risks not only his reputation, but also the life of this guy who’s trapped in the mine.” 1951

All That Heaven Allows: In this Douglas Sirk melodrama, Rock Hudson plays a gardener who falls in love with a society widow played by Jane Wyman. Scandale! 1955

America, America: Drawn directly from director Elia Kazan’s family history, this film offers a passionate, intense view of the challenges faced by Greek immigrants at the end of the 19th century. 1963

An American in Paris: This Vincente Minnelli film, with Gene Kelly, picked up the idea of stopping within a film for a dance from The Red Shoes. 1951

Apocalypse Now: This Francis Ford Coppola masterpiece is from a period when directors like Brian DePalma, John Milius, Paul Schrader, Scorsese and others had great freedom—freedom that they then lost. 1979

Arsenic and Old Lace: Scorsese is a big fan of many Frank Capra movies, and this Cary Grant vehicle is one of several that he’s enjoyed with his family at his office screening room. 1944

The Bad and the Beautiful: Vincente Minnelli directed this film about a cynical Hollywood mogul trying to make a comeback. It stars Kirk Douglas, Lana Turner, Walter Pidgeon and Dick Powell. 1952

The Band Wagon: “It’s my favorite of the Vincente Minnelli musicals. I love the storyline that combines Faust and a musical comedy, and the disaster that results. Tony Hunter, the lead character played by Fred Astaire, is a former vaudeville dancer whose time has passed, and who’s trying to make it on Broadway, which is a very different medium of course. By the time the movie was made, the popularity of the Astaire/Rogers films had waned, raising the question of what are you going to do with Fred Astaire in Technicolor? So, really, Tony Hunter is Fred Astaire–his whole reputation is on the line, and so was Fred Astaire’s.” 1953

Born on the Fourth of July: Produced by Universal Pictures under Tom Pollock and Casey Silver, this Tom Cruise movie (directed by Oliver Stone) was an example of how that studio “wanted to make special pictures,” says Scorsese. 1989

Cape Fear: As he once explained to Stephen Spielberg over dinner in Tribeca, one of Scorsese’s fears about directing a remake of this film was that, “The original was so good. I mean, you’ve got Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, Polly Bergen, it’s terrific!” 1962

In a recent article, NPR highlighted several books that are being turned into films this year. Read the entire article here, or check out a couple below:

Adjustment Bureau (March 4)

The Book: This rom-thriller is “loosely” based on the short story “Adjustment Team” by science fiction master Philip K. Dick. In Dick’s story, first published in Orbit in 1954, a real estate salesman named Fletcher suddenly gets caught up in a complex scheme to ease Soviet-bloc tensions — a series of mysterious events ensues.

The Film: Matt Damon plays an affable U.S. congressman who falls for a modern dancer in New York City (Emily Blunt), but strange forces (and yes, mysterious events) keep them apart. Watch the trailer.

See It With: The conspiracy theorist in your life.

The Lincoln Lawyer (March 18)

The Book: Crime novelist Michael Connelly can’t and won’t stop churning out hit books, and this is his 16th — the story of Micky Haller (half-brother of Connelly’s main protagonist Heironymous Bosch), who operates a two-bit law practice out of the back of a Lincoln Town Car. Haller lands a wealthy client who wants off the hook for attempted murder charges against a lovely young woman, and the lies and demons spool out from there.

The Film: It is exciting to see Matthew McConaughey back in a meaty, dramatic role after he has spent so much time in board shorts (there are serious Time To Kill flashbacks here). With an ensemble cast that includes Marisa Tomei and Ryan Phillippe and the kind of grimy cinematography that popcorn was made for, The Lincoln Lawyer should be one of spring’s big box office draws. Watch the trailer.

See It With: A second date. The action sequences and the soapy legalese will give you plenty to talk about over spaghetti.

Moneyball (Sept 23)

The Book: Uber-journalist Michael Lewis simply cannot write a bad book — he wrote The Blind Side, Liar’s Poker, The Big Short and about 100 amazing magazine investigations. Moneyball is Lewis’ glimpse inside the world of professional baseball. Published in 2003, the book follows the Oakland A’s and their GM Billy Beane as the team attempts to win despite being one of the more broke franchises in the American League.

The Film: Brad Pitt. Philip Seymour Hoffman. Robin Wright. Jonah Hill (okay, that one is not like the others). Director Bennett Miller of Capote. That’s all we need to say for now.

See It With: Your dad (or whoever drove you to tee-ball practice).

Watch a clip of Have You Heard from Johannesburg – Road to Resistance

Have You Heard From Johannesburg is seven documentary stories, produced and directed by Connie Field, chronicling the history of the global anti-aprtheid movement that took on South Africa’s entrenched apartheid regime and its international supporters who considered South Africa an ally in the Cold War.

Almost fifty years ago, South Africans began to realize that their freedom struggle had to be built in four arenas of action: mass action, underground organization, armed struggle, and international mobilization. These documentaries take viewers inside that last arena, the movement to mobilize worldwide citizen action to isolate the apartheid regime. Inspired by the courage and suffering of South Africa’s people as they fought back against the violence and oppression of racism, foreign solidarity groups, in cooperation with exiled South Africans, took up the anti-apartheid cause. Working against heavy odds, in a climate of apathy or even support for the governments of Verwoerd, Vorster and P.W. Botha, campaigners challenged their governments and powerful corporations in the West to face up to the immortality of their collaboration with apartheid.

This was not just a political battle; it was economic, cultural, moral, and spiritual. The struggle came to many surprising venues: it was waged in sports arenas and cathedrals, in embassies and corporate boardrooms, at fruit stands and beaches, at rock concerts and gas stations. Thousands died, but in the end, nonviolent pressures played a major part in the collapse of apartheid and thus in the stunning victory of democracy in South Africa.

The combined stories have a scope that is epic in both space and time, spanning most of the globe over half a century. Beginning with the very first session of the United nations, and ending in 1990 – when, after 27 years in prison, Nelson Mandela, the best known leader of the African National Congress (ANC) toured the world a free man.
