Star Trek: Axanar

Star Trek has one of the most vibrant fan communities in Federation space and beyond. (If you have any doubts, check out Trekkies: HU DVD 744.) Star Trek has one of the most vibrant fan communities in Federation space and beyond. (If you have any doubts, check out Trekkies: HU DVD 744.) But like so many fan communities, Trekkies occasionally find themselves on the expensive side of copyright infringement lawsuits. While there’s no profit in learning Klingon, there is certainly the possibility of profit in creating a 90 minute film with a budget of over a million dollars. And that is, from a copyright holder’s perspective, a bit of a problem.

The issue of where to draw the line between fan and creator is at the heart of the debate over the fan-produced film “Axanar,” which spurred a copyright infringement lawsuit pitting its creator against CBS and Paramount. The proposed film is set 21 years prior to Star Trek: TOS (HU DVD 6203), and planned to use copyrighted materials extensively. As you can see from the above “Prelude to Axanar,” the film would certainly have been impressive: far above many fan created works, and worlds beyond our dearly departed Trek in the Park. A settlement allowing two short films to appear online without commercials was reached last week. This issue has been widely covered (see Ars Technica and the NYT) in part because the lawsuit represents a deviation from previous attitudes about fan created works deriving from the Star Trek franchise.

This conflict arises again and again as the line between consumer and producer is blurred. Anyone can write fanfiction. We may reach a similarly leveled playing field in film. In Star Trek’s case, an open submission policy once allowed fan-written material to make its way into the canon. Now, fan-produced works, including fan fiction and fan films, make up a thriving dimension of the Star Trek universe. Whether to embrace these efforts or play lawsuit whack-a-mole is a problem faced by creators who reach any degree of success. Who gets to participate, and how, is a negotiation happening right now in our culture and our courtrooms. And while it’s not the final frontier, it is certainly a strange new world.

The Oscars are on tonight at 7pm. Will you be watching? If so, will you be tweeting about it too? Word on the street is that tonight there may be some record numbers in social media usage involving tonight’s award ceremony. Many celebrities are expected to be tweeting, some from behind the scenes at the Oscars, some from the red carpet and others from their couches. Tons of non-celebrity TV viewers are expected to be tweeting and Facebook posting their opinions on various aspects of the Oscars throughout the course of the event.

There is quite a busy Oscars site with plenty of things to keep you occupied as you watch the ceremony. This includes a Backstage Pass page with photos and videos designed to give you the “insider’s experience”. There’s plenty of fuel here for all your social media activities this evening.

There’s even a free Oscars App which is also designed to provide you with some sort of insider’s view of all the excitement. I actually just downloaded it out of curiosity and at first glance, it’s similar to the Oscar website and appears to more or less be a source for all the little behind the scenes videos you may or may not have an interest in watching.

To learn more about social media and the Oscars, check out this article from the Wall Street Journal and check out the video below.

Last night on Sunday, January 29, 2012, tons of Hollywood’s biggest television and movie stars came together for the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. What’s interesting about the SAG awards is that there isn’t some predetermined committee that votes every year; instead its members vote on the SAG Award nominees and recipients. The Screen Actors Guild represents over 100,000 television and film actors. Of these, 4,200 are randomly selected to choose the nominees in thirteen performance categories (plus two stunt ensemble categories). Then all of the SAG members receive a ballot in order to vote for the award recipients.

The SAG Awards only honor performers in film and television; and they also give awards to out standing ensemble casts. See the nominees and recipients of the outstanding performance by and male and female actor in a leading role below.

The AFI Discovery Channel SilverDocs Film Festival kicked off today. It runs from June 20 – June 26. There are many ways to keep up with the film festival. They have the SilverDocs web site, which also contains the “festival genius”, a guide to all the films that includes brief summaries, Youtube trailers, and show dates and times.

You can follow the SilverDocs on Twitter @silverdocs or find them on Facebook, where they have a SILVERDOCS Facebook fan page.

These guys are really covering all the bases because they’ve even got a SilverDocs tumblr, which is a blog that is currently highlighting titles in the film festival with eye-catching stills and links back to the film descriptions and show dates and times on their official site.

Finally, they have a Silver Docs Youtube Channel with video of the kick-off party and trailers for some of the films being shown this week.

Here’s the AFI SilverDocs 2011 Sizzle Reel:

Bumble Bee Slams into a Police SUV During Transformers 3 Shoot

Michael Bay loves collision and mayhem in his films but this one he could have done without.

While shooting Transformers 3 on-location in Washington DC, the Camaro Autobot Bumblebee t-boned a real DC police officer’s Tahoe as it was speeding to answer a suspicious package call. The officer was using a different radio frequency than the police detail assigned to keep the Transformers 3 set closed and safe. While the collision looks like a part of the scene as Autobots Optimus Prime, Ratchet and Ironhide motor along, it most certainly is not.

This incident is yet another scar for Bay’s third and presumably final Transformers film. A 24-year old woman suffered permanent brain damage last month when a stunt went awry on an Indiana freeway, sending debris hurtling through her windshield.
