The Netflix streaming catalog isn’t accessible to non-subscribers and even subscribers will find it a hassle to browse so Instant Watcher was created by a third-party developer to make that process less of a chore. The site’s design makes it look like a front for a pirate site but it’s purpose is nothing more than to improve the Netflix users’ experience and direct new business to Netflix by enabling the non-subscriber to see the streaming offerings before signing up. Now that spotting an open Blockbuster location is a novelty that merits a double take, and scores of other video rental chains have vanished, movie fans who want to rent some DVDs for the road have had to change the way they operate.

According to a Washington Post trend story, the lack of DVD rental stores complicates road trips. Noting that D.C. is now down to its last Blockbuster, the reporter talks to renters who lament the changing times.

Netflix is offering streaming-only service in Canada and they’re starting to heavily push that option in the US. Whether they can ramp up the selection of streaming titles without raising subscription costs precipitously is a big question. Will instant access trump the loss in quality and occasional network glitches inherent in streaming video? Will a major shift to streaming content consume so much bandwidth that it clogs the internet? According to Sandvine, a company that analyzes internet traffic, Netflix already accounts for 20% of the downstream traffic in the US during peak times and that’s with their current assortment of mostly non-premium content.

Fresh off its invasion of Canada, Netflix recently announced a deal with NBC/Universal that will add a bunch of the entertainment company’s network and cable TV offerings to Netflix’s streaming service.

Starting this week, Netflix Watch Instantly users will have access to

* Episodes from every season of Saturday Night Live, including day-after broadcast of the upcoming 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons plus hundreds of episodes from the first 35 years of SNL.

* More than 75 prior season episodes of Battlestar Galactica, as well as prior seasons of Destination Truth and Eureka.

* Every episode from the last season of 30 Rock, The Office and Law & Order: SVU, as well as earlier seasons of those shows renewed for streaming from Netflix under the current deal.

* All prior seasons — and eventually next year’s final season — of Friday Night Lights.

* All prior seasons of USA Network’s Psych, In Plain Sight, as well as all seasons of Monk.
